Sodium fluorescein was used as a fluorescent tracer to study the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB) in rodent models. The organic anion transport peptide (OATP) mediated drug transport in liver cells was studied using this dye as a probe substrate. Sodium fluorescein is also used to restore in situ solutes into the bone after photochromic fading through fluorescence recovery. Sodium fluorescein salt is used as a solute to study microvascular permeability. It has been used as a testing molecule for studying the permeability of the blood barrier.
